IOGT Norge is running a campaign to empower parents in their role as key figures in preventing substance abuse among youth. IOGT highlights the importance of municipalities providing opportunities for parents to meet and gain knowledge about substance abuse and prevention strategies. This effort is a significant part of IOGT’s training program in local alcohol policy, designed specifically for politicians. Their campaign videos underscore how strengthening parents in their preventive efforts can contribute to creating a safer environment for young people, and they encourage viewers to share the message and engage in the discussion.
As part of its broader mission to support effective alcohol policies at the local level, IOGT will offer free training sessions for municipal politicians throughout 2024. These sessions, funded by the Norwegian Directorate of Health, aim to educate local councils, party groups, and committees responsible for licensing on the importance of knowledge-based alcohol policies that prioritize the well-being of children and youth. IOGT has also developed a short digital mini-course that introduces key themes in alcohol policy, including the role of parental involvement and the value of offering diverse leisure activities for young people as a preventive measure.
In addition to their training for politicians, IOGT operates the “Sterk&Klar” program, which provides parents of middle school students with resources and meetings focused on substance abuse prevention. This program is available for municipalities to implement, further supporting parents in their crucial role as primary preventers of youth substance abuse. IOGT encourages politicians and community leaders to engage with their offerings and collaborate on creating supportive environments for young people, ultimately contributing to safer and healthier communities.
