Alcohol and Cancer: Explained

The Institute of Alcohol Studies (IAS) recently released a new video in their Explained series, focusing on the link between alcohol and cancer. This video highlights that alcohol was classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer in 1988, indicating a definitive connection to cancer, yet public awareness of this remains low.

Alcohol consumption is linked to at least seven types of cancer, including mouth, throat, voice box, oesophagus, breast, liver, and bowel cancer, with growing evidence suggesting a link to pancreatic cancer as well. Each year in the UK, alcohol causes a significant number of cancer deaths, comparable to those caused by alcohol-related liver disease. The video, featuring Professor Linda Bauld, addresses critical questions about how alcohol causes cancer, the number of cases and deaths it leads to, and strategies for reducing these risks. Previous videos in the series have tackled topics such as alcohol marketing, the impact of alcohol pricing, and cardiovascular harm.
