Detect to Protect

The Erie County Department of Health (ECDOH) has launched the “Detect to Protect” campaign, a harm reduction initiative aimed at mitigating drug overdoses and deaths within Erie County. This campaign targets individuals at risk, as well as their families, friends, and community leaders, emphasizing the necessity of testing illicit drugs, particularly cocaine, for fentanyl. With a significant rise in fentanyl-related overdoses, especially affecting communities of colour and older residents, the campaign seeks to disseminate harm reduction messaging, education, and activities throughout the community. It was developed based on county-level overdose data and trends, alongside feedback from focus groups and interviews with healthcare providers, people with lived experience, and other community members.

In collaboration with Impact Marketing and Communications, ECDOH has crafted a campaign that embodies the spirit of Buffalo, known as the City of Good Neighbors. The initiative features real people from Erie County, highlighting the collective effort required to tackle the overdose crisis. The campaign includes print ads, broadcast and digital media, and a robust social media toolkit to facilitate widespread awareness and engagement. Running through December 2025, “Detect to Protect” aims to inspire community members to protect themselves and their neighbours by increasing awareness and participation in harm reduction efforts. Key elements of the campaign will be displayed in the Rath Building lobby, with ongoing advertisements and social media activities tailored to reach those most vulnerable to opioid overdoses.
