40% of Cancer Cases Are Linked to Lifestyle Choices

A new study led by the American Cancer Society, as highlighted in a HealthDay video, reveals that 40% of cancer cases and nearly half of all cancer deaths in the U.S. are linked to modifiable lifestyle factors. These factors include smoking, excess weight, alcohol consumption, lack of exercise, diet, UV exposure, and infections. Smoking emerged as the top risk factor, responsible for 20% of cancer cases and almost a third of cancer deaths. Overweight and obesity accounted for nearly 8% of cases, followed by alcohol at about 5%, UV radiation, and physical inactivity. The study highlighted that 100% of cervical cancer, nearly 90% of lung cancer, and 80% of melanoma cases were due to these factors. The findings underscore the importance of increasing access to preventive health care and awareness, including vaccines for hepatitis B and HPV.
