The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention has released a new video titled “Impairment Detection in Alcohol Sales and Service,” aimed at educating bartenders and servers on how to identify and handle impaired customers. The video underscores the dual responsibility of ensuring patrons enjoy their time while maintaining safety, emphasizing that serving individuals under the influence of alcohol, cannabis, prescription medications, or other substances is not only bad for business but also against the law. Through practical examples, the video highlights key signs of impairment such as slurred speech, red and glassy eyes, unsteady movements, and erratic behaviour, and provides a step-by-step guide on how to refuse service, ensure customers leave safely, and properly document incidents.
