Forward Leeds, the city’s alcohol and drug support service, has launched a new campaign for Alcohol Awareness Week 2024, running from 1st to 7th July. The initiative aims to help residents of Leeds take control of their drinking habits with the theme “There are lots of reasons to cut back on the booze. It can lift your mood, help you lose weight and save you money,” as emphasized by Forward Leeds Manager James Barrie. This year’s campaign will feature daily social media videos packed with creative ideas and practical tips to reduce alcohol consumption, encouraging the community to share their own strategies using the hashtag #AAW24.
In addition to the online campaign, Forward Leeds will engage directly with the community by hosting a face-to-face advice session at Kirkgate Market on Friday, 5th July. This in-person event aims to provide support and gather tips from the public on reducing alcohol intake. James Barrie highlighted the inclusive approach of the campaign, inviting people to share their personal experiences and advice on social media, creating a collective effort towards a healthier Leeds. The campaign hopes to build a supportive network that encourages positive lifestyle changes by promoting active participation and publicising user-generated content.
The health benefits of reducing alcohol consumption are well-documented and will be a key focus of the campaign. Excessive drinking can have significant impacts on physical and mental health, increasing the risk of long-term harm. Forward Leeds’ campaign aims to highlight practical ways to cut back on alcohol, from simple lifestyle adjustments like planning drinking limits and choosing smaller drink sizes to seeking professional support. The campaign is part of the nationwide Alcohol Awareness Week coordinated by Alcohol Change UK, which sees participation from over 5,000 public health teams, workplaces, and community groups annually.
