Alcohol-free parties: healthier and more inclusive!

The World Health Organization (WHO) European Region recently highlighted the benefits of alcohol-free social events through their innovative “alcohol-free Friday” initiative. This event, held at the United Nations office in Copenhagen, Denmark, aimed to showcase how gatherings without alcohol can still be entertaining and enjoyable. In Europe, where alcohol consumption rates are the highest globally, and its associated harms, including over 200 diseases and seven types of cancer, pose significant health risks, such initiatives are crucial. By offering delicious mocktails and various entertainment options, the WHO demonstrated that alcohol-free events could be both fun and inclusive, catering to individuals who choose not to drink for various reasons.

Population-level policies such as taxation and limiting the availability of alcohol have been recognized as effective strategies in reducing alcohol-related harms. However, cultural changes, like promoting alcohol-free social events, can also play a significant role. The “alcohol-free Friday” event is part of the broader WHO/EU Evidence into Action Alcohol project (#EVIDACTION), which aims to align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and other global commitments to improve public health. By encouraging alcohol-free socializing, these initiatives contribute to creating healthier and more inclusive environments, ultimately saving lives and promoting well-being across the European Region.
