Take Back Day

The National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, spearheaded by the DEA, represents a significant initiative in the United States’ battle against the drug overdose epidemic—a matter of both public health and national security. This campaign encourages the public to play a proactive role in mitigating the risk of medication misuse and the potential for opioid addiction by safely disposing of unneeded medications. Highlighting the DEA’s dedication to enhancing community safety and health, the initiative aims not only to diminish the instances of drug-related violence but also to lower the rates of overdoses and overdose-related deaths. By facilitating the removal of excess medications from homes, the DEA strengthens its commitment to public welfare and security.

The importance of this campaign is underscored by its impressive achievements, including the latest event in October 2023, which saw unprecedented participation across the country. With 4,383 law enforcement agencies participating, 4,675 collection sites were set up, culminating in the collection of nearly 600,000 lbs. (300 tons) of prescription drugs. This effort significantly contributes to the overall goal of reducing the accessibility of unused prescription drugs, which can lead to dangerous and often tragic consequences when they fall into the wrong hands. The initiative has collectively amassed over 17,900,351 lbs. (8,950 tons) of medications to date, with the next Take Back Day scheduled for April 27, 2024, promising to further the cause of making communities safer and healthier by preventing drug misuse.
