Less Alcohol – More of Life

This January, the Styrian Health Fund is once again calling on the population of Styria (Austria) to abstain from alcohol for a month. This initiative started in 2022 and has seen many participants over the years.

The “Less Alcohol – More of Life” prevention initiative by the Styrian Health Fund brings the international “Dry January” campaign to the region. With the slogan “Styria Stays Dry,” the campaign promotes alcohol abstinence for a month to raise awareness about personal alcohol consumption and the benefits of abstaining for several weeks.

Participation challenge for Styrians
The challenge highlights how often people unconsciously reach for a glass of beer or wine. The voluntary abstinence, especially when done in a group and within a structured framework, is easier, hence the adaptation of the UK-originated participation challenge for the local population. All Styrians are invited to take on this challenge.

“Dry January” – An opportunity for health awareness
Health Minister Karlheinz Kornhäusl supports the campaign: “Health is our most valuable asset, and excessive alcohol consumption seriously threatens it. The Styrian alcohol action plan is a call for mindfulness and responsibility. We focus on education and raising awareness for moderate alcohol consumption. Dry January is an opportunity to consciously focus on one’s health.”

The Styrian initiative “Less Alcohol – More of Life” supports “Dry January” through their social media channels on Facebook and Instagram. They offer medical expert tips, positive motivation, and various information and tips to persevere, as well as the benefits of a month-long alcohol fast, says Petra Wielender from the initiative. The website www.mehr-vom-leben.jetzt offers resources like a recipe book for non-alcoholic alternatives.

Four weeks without alcohol: noticeable health benefits
Studies from the British campaign show that a four-week abstention has noticeable effects on the body, including weight loss, better sleep, fewer skin problems, and overall improved health. Long-term effects are also significant. According to a University of Sussex study, more than 70% of participants reported healthier drinking habits six months later.

Voluntary abstinence without judgement
In Austria, and hence in Styria, alcohol is deeply rooted in society. For many, alcohol becomes a problem over time. Approximately 370,000 adults in Austria are classified as alcohol-dependent (2.5% women and 7.5% men), and about a million Austrians consume alcohol to a health-threatening extent. The “Dry January – Styria Stays Dry” campaign is directed at all Styrians who regularly consume alcohol, not just those with dependency issues. “We aim to motivate voluntary abstinence, showing participants the positive side-effects, such as improved health and financial savings,” explains Bianca Heppner from the initiative.

Open and free for all
Participation in “Dry January – Styria Stays Dry” is straightforward, free, and open to all interested parties. No registration is required – just accept the challenge and follow the campaign on social media and the web for support.
