Focus on road fitness

In 2022, the state of Baden-Württemberg implemented a notable prevention campaign focusing on the risks of alcohol, drugs, and medication in road traffic, particularly targeting young drivers. This campaign was a part of the broader initiative aligned with the national “sicher.mobil.leben” (safe.mobile.life) action day, a tradition in which Baden-Württemberg has consistently participated by launching specialized prevention campaigns.

The 2022 campaign, named “Fahrtüchtigkeit im Blick” (Focus on Road Fitness), was approved during the Spring 2021 conference of the Interior Ministers, spearheaded by Baden-Württemberg. This initiative was a response to the alarming statistics indicating that impaired driving ability was a leading cause of fatal traffic accidents. Specifically, in Baden-Württemberg, impaired driving was responsible for one in seven fatal traffic incidents in the preceding year, leading to 31 fatalities. The campaign was part of the state’s ongoing efforts to combat the influence of alcohol and drugs on the road through rigorous traffic monitoring.

The kickoff of the campaign took place on May 5th, 2022, in Ravensburg, coinciding with the “sicher.mobil.leben” action day.

Football Bundesliga Clubs and Athletes Supported the Campaign

An impactful aspect of the 2022 campaign was the involvement of popular football Bundesliga clubs, such as VfB Stuttgart, SC Freiburg, and both the men’s and women’s teams of TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. These clubs and their players, who are highly regarded by fans, served as ambassadors for the campaign.

Key participants included Martina Tufeković, goalkeeper for TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, Chris Richards, defender for TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, Waldemar Anton, defender for VfB Stuttgart, and Vincenzo Grifo, midfielder for SC Freiburg. They contributed to the promotional content of the campaign.

The promotional spots were disseminated through the police’s and participating football clubs’ social media channels. Moreover, these spots were also showcased in the stadiums during home games, ensuring a broad and effective reach.

The 2022 campaign exemplified a strategic approach to enhancing road safety, with a special focus on the youth. It effectively utilized the influence of sports icons to spread a vital message about the dangers associated with impaired driving.
