In light of the holiday season, the Ministry of Health and Social Security of Luxembourg is launching a campaign to raise awareness about the risks of alcohol and promote moderation in consumption, as well as healthier alternatives for celebrating.
During this time, many tend to increase their alcohol intake, often during work events, social gatherings, or family meals. Highlighting the harmful effects of alcohol, particularly from excessive consumption, is crucial.
Alcohol, a major pathogen, affects individual health and society. It causes 60 medical conditions, including certain cancers, and increases risks of injuries, violence, and accidents. Its consumption also leads to economic inefficiency and social issues like absenteeism, decreased productivity, and higher crime rates.
In Europe, including Luxembourg, alcohol consumption is notably high. The World Health Organization’s 2019 report indicated that Europe has the highest per capita alcohol consumption and proportion of drinkers. In the European Union, 8.4% of the population drinks alcohol daily.
Alcohol causes about 1 million deaths annually in Europe, often among the young (average age: 21.2 for women and 27.5 for men), mainly due to accidents. Luxembourg ranks third in Europe for excessive drinking, with 34.3% of residents reporting excessive drinking monthly. About 43% of Luxembourg’s population over 15 drinks weekly, and nearly 9% daily. A 2022 study found that 42.7% of 11 to 18-year-olds have consumed alcohol.
In Luxembourg, drunk driving is the second leading cause of road accidents, with 15 deaths and 36 serious injuries in 2022.
The campaign aims to encourage moderate drinking and avoid excess. The Ministry recommends not exceeding two drinks. Practical tips include setting a limit before drinking, savouring each sip, exploring non-alcoholic options like mocktails, alternating alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, regulating alcohol-free periods, eating while drinking, and discussing “low drinking” intentions with loved ones. The campaign also provides action plans for employers to offer alternatives during staff parties.
