Alcohol and driving: danger in sight

The Department of Motor Vehicles in Rio de Janeiro (DETRAN-RJ) has launched an educational campaign to address the dangers of drunk driving. The campaign includes a series of posters that convey stark warnings and consequences for those who choose to drive while intoxicated.

One poster highlights the financial penalties, noting that the fine for drunk driving can reach up to R$ 2,934.70, and doubles if the offence is repeated within a year. Additionally, offenders can have their driving privileges suspended for 12 months.

Another poster references Brazilian traffic law (CTB Article 165), which classifies driving under the influence as a very serious offence. The campaign also illustrates the impairment caused by alcohol, such as balance and motor coordination issues, delayed reflexes, and compromised judgment and perception, all of which significantly increase the risk of traffic accidents.

Visual impairments are also featured, with messages explaining how alcohol consumption can blur vision, making it difficult to see traffic details and signs, thus affecting the driver’s ability to react appropriately to road conditions.

Moreover, the campaign points out the false sense of confidence that alcohol can provide, leading to reckless driving behaviour and potentially tragic consequences.

The closing poster in the series shows an individual refusing a drink with a caption about the dangers of mixing alcohol and driving, encouraging viewers to consider the risks before getting behind the wheel.

This public awareness initiative by DETRAN-RJ aims to educate drivers about the risks and legal implications of driving while intoxicated. It is part of ongoing efforts to improve road safety and reduce traffic-related fatalities and injuries.
